Voilà maintenant près d’une semaine que je suis dans cette ville mythique qu’est Ushuaïa, ville la plus australe du monde. Etant donné que je vais rester encore un peu ici, je ferai une brève sur la ville et ses environs un petit peu plus tard.
Lors de mon sejour ici, je fais pour le moment deux choses principale : Mon boulot de serveur et la recherche d’un bateau pour aller sur le 7ème continent et ainsi réaliser un véritable tour du monde qui me ménerait sur tous les continents.
Concernant mon boulot de serveur dans un restaurant de fruits de mer, je ne vais pas m’étendre dessus, je l’ai trouvé après avoir passé un après-midi à faire du porte à porte en proposant mes services. L’objectif est de progresser en Espagnol, de m’enrichir d’une nouvelle expérience et de ne pas dépenser d’argent durant mon séjour à Ushuaïa (qui est une ville assez chère car touristique et coupée du monde). Au niveau des finances, mon travail me rapporte des cacahuètes mais suffisamment pour me payer l’auberge dans laquelle je séjourne, la nourriture, le cyber-café et d’autres petites choses. Mon rôle n’est pas très compliqué, je dois servir différents plats, ouvrir des moules, couper du pain, débarrasser et laver les tables…Rien de bien passionnant sauf quand le restaurant se vide et que l’on peut discuter avec les touristes présents.
L’autre activité principale de mon sejour ici est le bateau-stop avec pour objectif l’Antarctique. Si cela me permettrait de réaliser un tour du monde complet en allant sur tous les continents, ce n’est pas une mince affaire. En effet, de 3000 à 40000, c’est le nombre de dollars que demande pour une semaine chaque bateau transportant des passagers (qu’ils soient de croisières ou scientifiques). Mon défi étant de faire le tour du monde sans dépenser le moindre centime de transport, il est donc tout à fait exclu que je paie quoi que ce soit. Néanmoins, j’ai proposé mes services à ces bateaux et après avoir fait des recherches, j’ai pu me procurer la liste avec les adresses e-mails de tous les armateurs ayant des bateaux partant sur l’Antarctique.
J’ai écrit à chacun d’entre eux la lettre suivante (désolé pour les non-anglophones, tout se passe en anglais) :
“Dear Mr X,
Following my conversation with the Antartica office in Ushuaïa earlier today, I would like to confirm you my interest in taking part in one of your next trip leaving to Antarctica.
First of all, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Ludovic Hubler, I am a 26 year old French citizen with a Master degree of Science in Management from both the business school of Strasbourg (France) and Texas A&M University (United States).
Before starting my professional career, I have decided to fulfill my childhood dream by touring the world using boats and cars as my only means of transportation. The challenge I set myself is to use only hitch-hiking and not spend a dollar in transportation. This project is also supported by 2 humanitarian missions (Brazil and Vietniam) and a pedagogic project in which I am the “big brother” of around 30 children victims of cancer and leukemia (hospital of Strasbourg, France). The objective of this “big brothering” is to share on a daily basis my adventure around the globe with the children.
This whole project should take overall between 3 and 4 years (it started on January 1st 2003).
In order to make this dream come true, I need to travel to Antarctica, which is why I am writing to you personally.
Although I am aware that travelling on your boat free of charge is not a normal practice, you will agree that the above project does not fall in the “normal” category !
Why should you take me on board free of charge ?
1) During the trip, I could work as a crew member and help as directed by your team. As I speak french, english, portugese, spanish (intermediate level) and german (intermediate level), I could be useful to the tourists on board. In addition, during my stay in Ushuaïa, I work as a waiter at Restaurante Volver and would therefore be pleased to help your waiters in their daily tasks on board.
2) As my adventure is sponsored and mediatized (press, radio and TV), I would be happy to add your name and logo on my website (www.ludovichubler.com). The number of visitors is about 200 a day with about half of them in France and the rest all over the world.
3) I have a contract with a producer to make a movie out of my trip (with Les films de l’Europe, 18 allée Spach 67000 Strasbourg –
FRANCE). Therefore, 2 possibilites :
– I could record the cruise and add part of it in my film (free advertising for you).
– I could record the whole cruise for you. Having some images of the cruise could certainly help you maintain and improve the service you are offering to all your customers.
4) Taking me on board would enable the sick children and I to discover the 7th continent.

Il y a aussi quelques voiliers partant vers le sud semble t-il, je ne suis pas encore allé voir mais je vais le faire dès aujourd’hui.
